This issue (and, in part, the next one) of R&CD is dedicated to one of the greatest scientists of the 19th century, Hermann Helmholtz. Below we give a short list of the main accomplishments of Hermann Helmholtz, following [1–3], and provide some perspective on his lasting influence on the field of vortex dynamics.
